Program Objective:
Prepare, educate ad provide students for certification and employment as an entry
level Medical Coding and Billing. This extensive medical training program is de-
signed to provide the student with the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform
medical coding and billing. Positions are available in the hospital, physician’s of-
fice, insurance companies, private billing companies and self-employment as a
coder.

Program Description:
Successful completion of the program prepares the student for certification as a
Medical Coding and Billing professional. The program consists of classroom lec-
ture 370 hours, computer lab 120 hours, and an externship of 200 hours in a doc-
tors office or hospital.

  • MCB-101 Medical Coding and Billing –Lecture 370 clock hours
    This course provides the knowledge to gain entry level employment in the medical
    billing and insurance industry. Lecture topics include anatomy, medical terminol-
    ogy, introduction to coding, ICD-9-CM coding, CPT coding, HCPCS coding, cod-
    ing and billing by medical procedure, and billing and reimbursement practices.
  • MCB-102 Medical Coding and Billing –Computer Lab 120 clock hours
    This course is conducted in conjunction with MCB-101, medical coding and bill-
    ing- lecture. In the computer lab the students practices the profession of medical
    coding and billing by performing realistic assignments on school computers.
  • MCB-103 Medical Coding and Billing – Externship 200 clock hours
    In conjunction with MCB-101 and MCB-102 the student must complete an
    externship. Under supervision of a clinical instructor or preceptor, the student is
    allowed to practice billing and coding for actual patients in a clinical setting such
    as a hospital, clinic or physicians office.
  • EMS-200 Medical Terminology 30 clock hours
    This course covers the history of medical terminology, use of root words, prefixes
    and suffixes so the student has an understanding of medical terminology as it re-
    lates to the medical profession.
