PARAMEDIC III HOSPITAL EXTERNSHIP (200 HOURS)                                                                                                                                            

All students are required to complete 200 hours of hospital clinicals. Before the student can begin this phase, specific criteria must be completed to the satisfaction of the Instructor and Course Coordinator.

PARAMEDIC IV FIELD EXTERNSHIP (400 HOURS)                                                                                                                                                     

All students are required to complete 400 hours of ambulance clinicals. Before the student can begin this phase, specific criteria must be completed to the satisfaction of the Instructor and Course Coordinator.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS                                                                                                                                                                                        

The Paramedic student must complete the following to be considered for graduation. These requirements must be completed prior to taking the final exam

1. Complete all required class, lab and clinical hours.

2. Pass each module exam, mid-term and final with 80% or above

3. Complete ACLS, PALS, PHTLS courses.

4. Demonstrate competencies in required critical tasks as outlined in skills lab, clinical and field internships.

5. Completions of FISDAP.

6. Meets all financial requirements.

 

Paramedic II Lecture/Lab (322 hours) 

120 hours - Cardiology, During this portion of the program students will be taught the functions of the cardiac system, recognition and management of cardiac arrest patient and proper use of the defibrillator. Education in this portion is completed using lecture and practical skills. At the conclusion of this portion of the program the student will receive instruction in Advanced Cardiopulmonary Life Support (ACLS). Upon successful completion the student will receive provider certification in this required element of the paramedic certification.

44 hours - Trauma, In trauma management the student will understand to recognize signs and symptoms of the trauma patient and to administer proper and vital treatment through the use lecture and practical skills. The student who successfully completes this portion of the program will receive provider certification in Pre-hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS).

23 hours - Medical Emergencies, Students will receive instruction in management of medical emergencies that can be encountered in the pre-hospital setting and management of the same. This is learned through lecture and practical skills.

18 hours - Obstetrics and Gynecology/Behavioral Emergencies, Recognition and management of the obstetric and gynecology emergencies. Patient behavior changes can become an emergency for the patient as well as anyone around him/her. The student will learn through lecture and lab on how to recognize and manage these types of patients in the pre-hospital setting.

21 hours - Pediatrics, The care of pediatrics patients and pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) is learned in this portion of the program. Recognition of common clinical problems and providing appropriate care of the neonate and instruction of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is completed through lecture and practical skills. Upon successful completion of this segment the student will receive provider certification in PALS.

64 hours - Emergency Scene Operations, The remainder of the program is comprised of training in the proper documentation completion, communications between the responding emergency medical service personnel and medical control. Proper control of a crime scene so that evidence is preserved for the use by police personnel.

32 hours - Structured Review, this portion of the program is designated for students to  review any all skills prior to the State and National testing.

PARAMEDIC COURSE CURRICULUM

The 512 hours of the classroom portion of the program the student will utilize the current course textbook as well as the workbook to learn and demonstrate skills in pre-hospital patient care. The hours are broken down to the following subjects

Paramedic I lecture/lab (190) hours

21 hours - Introduction to the program, medical terminology and abbreviations. The students will be introduced to medical terms and uses in the pre-hospital setting.

48 hours - Anatomy and Physiology/Patient Assessment,  The structure of the body and the process of assessing the patients illness or injury are taught. Practical skills labs as well as lecture are used.

22 hours - Fluids and Shock, The types and effects of shock and the management of patients are learned using lecture and practical skills for pre-hospital use.

72 hours - Pharmacology, Proper use, administration and the calculations of pre-hospital medications are learned by the student, along with contraindications for the use of medications, through lecture and practical skill stations. The student will properly learn to use the injection needles and intravenous catheters.

27 hours - Respiratory and Airway, Respiratory System Management is taught through the  use of the lecture as well as practical skill labs. The student will learn the human respiratory system as related to pre-hospital care. Along with skills, such as nasal and end tracheal intubations and proper administration of medications, the student will be able to manage respiratory injuries or injuries.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

The following objectives have been established for the EMS program department of FMTI for the Paramedic:

1. To develop in the graduate Paramedic an understanding of Emergency Medical Systems. The roles and responsibilities of the Paramedic are emphasized.

2. To prepare the graduate Paramedic to provide quality care and to function competently and effectively in the pre-hospital system. The graduate Paramedic will be able to demonstrate advanced skills and knowledge in his or her patient encounters.

3. To prepare the graduate Paramedic to successfully complete the state and/or National Paramedic Certificate Examinations.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS

All general school requirements, plus

1. Current CPR card, AHA-HCP or ARC Basic Rescue

2. Current Florida EMT-B or NREMT-B Certification

3. Pass the FMTI Paramedic entrance examination
