PATIENT CARE TECHNICIAN PROGRAM

Program Objective:
Prepare, educate and provide students for certification and employment as an en-
try level Patient Care Technician professional. In a clinical, hospital or physicians
office.
Program Description:
This extensive medical training program is designed to provide the student with
the knowledge, skills and abilities to function in the hospital setting as a patient
care Technician (PCT). The program is designed to assist the licensed nursing
staff with patient care, laboratory testing, patient diagnostics, ordering of exams
and procedures and documentation. The PCT is a vital member of the health care

during the day four days a week eight hours a day for 13 weeks.

  • PCT-101 Patient Care Technician-Lecture 310 clock hours
    This course provides the student with the knowledge to function as an entry level
    PCT. Topics include, Anatomy & Physiology, Basic Skills for the PCT, Basic Life
    Support/CPR, Phlebotomy, Point of Care testing, waived laboratory testing, di-
    etary assisting, eclectrocardiology, advanced PCT techniques, health unit coordi-
    nator, respiratory care and medical terminology.
  • PCT-102 Patient Care Technician-Skills Laboratory 100 clock hours
    This course provides the student with the motor skills to support the lecture sec-
    tion of the PCT course (PCT-101). The course provides the hands-on skills train-
    ing for, Basic Skills for the PCT, Basic Life Support/CPR, Phlebotomy, Point of
    Care testing, waived laboratory testing, dietary assisting, eclectrocardiology, ad-
    vanced PCT techniques, health unit coordinator, and respiratory care. This course
    is taken in conjunction with PCT-101
  • PCT-103 Patient Care Technician- Externship 310 clock hours
    In conjunction with PCT-101 and PCT-102 the student must complete a PCT
    externship. Under supervision of a clinical instructor or preceptor, the PCT stu-
    dent is allowed to practice and provide care to actual patients in a clinical setting
    such as a hospital, clinic or physicians office.
  • EMS-200 Medical Terminology 30 clock hours
    This course covers the history of medical terminology, use of root words, prefixes
    and suffixes so the student has an understanding of medical terminology as it re-
    lates to the medical profession.
